Parador Hotel Siguenza

The original castle was built in the fifth century and strengthened by the Moors in 712. In 1123 it was retaken by Fernando I and El Cid and was converted into a Bishop's Palace. In the late 1800's it fell into disuse and after a restoration which begun in 1964 it opened as a Parador twelve years later. The lounge is the original dining room of the castle. This huge room dwarfs the furniture made to accommodate mere humans with many chandeliers overhead lighting the vast area. The walls are hung with banners and suits of armour are displayed. Traditional Castilian furniture is found in the spacious, welcoming bedrooms some of which have four poster beds and a terrace. The views from the terrace may be over the red roofs of the town and the hills beyond or into paved the inner courtyard with it's fountain and well. Within this old building you find the requirements of a modern top hotel such as the gymnasium and sauna.

Parador Ubeda - Hotel Condestable Davalos Andalusia

Luxury four star hotel in a sixteenth century renaissance palace. This Parador was originally the palace of Dom Fernando Ortego Salido, the Dean of Malaga, who was more usually known a Dean Ortego. The Parador is located in the aristocratic and monumental town of Ubeda. Situated in the towns' most Renaissance square and next to some of the most beautiful buildings in the area, the Parador is in a former palace built in the 16th century (altered in the 17th) which belonged to the dean of the Sacred chapel of El Salvador.

The palace was altered and renovated in the 17th century and opened as a Parador in 1930.  Major restoration has been carried out by the group in 1942 and again in 1947. The Parador is named after Ruy Lopez de Davalos, a soldier who was taken by the Moors and, after a period of captivity was allowed to return home. He was a member of the Court of Juan II who gave him the title of "Condestable" which translates as High Constable. His portrait hangs over the fireplace in the restaurant. The exterior facade gives no indication of the very beautiful inner courtyard with a double gallery of which the upper part is glazed and has the guest bedrooms leading off. This area is reached by a very grand staircase from the reception floor. The friendly and comfortable bedrooms are large with decorated tiles on the floor and antique furniture. Six of the bedrooms and the suite look onto the Plaza de Vasquez of which the palace forms one side.

POUSADA DE BEJA. HOTEL SAO FRANCISCO

A restored 13th Century Franciscan Convent, this impressive Pousada is located in the heart of the historical centre of the Alentejo town of Beja in Portugal. The city was founded by Julius Ceasar in 48 BC and was originally named Pax Julia following the signing of the peace treaty here between the Romans and the Lusitanians. The town later became famous as the home of the nun, Mariana Alceforado. This young nun lived in the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Conceicao in the 1600s. She fell in love with a French soldier, and on his return to France she wrote several love letters to him. In later years the translation of these letters became internationally famous as "Letters of a Portuguese Nun". The originals of these translations have never been found. The 15th Century convent in which the nun lived is a beautiful building with a Rococo chapel and wonderful 16th and 17th Century painted tiles

POUSADA DE SETUBAL - HOTEL SAO FILIPE

Formerly a 17th Century Fortress built by King Filipe, the Hotel Pousada de Setubal is on a hilltop overlooking the city. The Pousada has stunning views over the Sado Estuary and the Troia peninsula to the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. Setubal is Portugal's third largest port and still holds fish auctions every morning at the harbour. The old town has a number of interesting monuments, the most important being the Igreja (church) de Jesus. This church is considered to be the first Manueline building and boasts an impressive doorway.

PORTUGAL - DOURO BASIN – OPORTO

The Pestana Porto Hotel, formerly the Porto Carlton, is situated on the river side in the old area of Porto looking across to the famous view of the river boats and the Port Wine houses on the south side. The hotel is in Praca da Ribeira and is a conversion of old houses, some dating from the 16th century. The remains of the old mediaeval city walls form part of the building. Recent excavations have found that Praca de Ribeira was created on the site of a very old dock from the days when commercial vessels used the river as a port. The old houses of the area have been recognized by UNESCO and given World Heritage Site status. The hotel is surrounded by small restaurants in the old buildings. Guests should take the opportunity to walk across the old iron two level bridge to visit the Port Wine lodges on the south bank in Vila Nova de Gaia.
