Lapland
promises fun for everyone, regardless of age.
Here, a certain magic fills the air, you can feel
it and knowing that Father Christmas has his home
here only adds to the excitement. Deep in the
pine trees his home is covered with snow –
it’s the stuff dreams are made of and you
can see it on the faces of everyone, not just
the children, as they set off in search of fantasy.
When one dreams of Christmas, snowy pastures spring
to mind, logs by the fireside and Yuletide carollers,
Santa Claus and goodwill toward all men. Here
you will find reindeer sleighs dashing through
the snow, snowmobiles traversing the tundra and
huskies racing in the distance. Lapland is the
winter experience of a lifetime, where dreams
do often become reality.
The
enchanting capital of Estonia is a rare delight.
Mediaeval Tallinn regained its freedom after the
break up of the old Soviet Union and the city
is a fine example of where East meets West. The
old town with its cobbled streets, slender spires
and colourful buildings is untouched by the 20th
century.
Tallinn has a regular bus and tram service for
getting around and tickets can be bought on board
or at kiosks. A visit to Tallinn’s Castle
on Troompea Hill is essential. Many of the 19
towers of the town fortifications today serve
as museums and restaurants. Enjoy the classical
music concerts and organ recitals at a range of
venues throughout the year.

The
Basque capital of Bilbao is only just over an
hour from London and it has been transformed into
one Europe’s future cities. It has the cleanest
and most efficient tram system, an elegant new
airport and a city centre that boasts fist class
shops and restaurants. The catalyst for the change
was undoubtedly the construction of the amazing
Guggenheim Museum on the banks of the River Bilbao.
The towering titanium structure of curves and
dramatic angles has become the symbol of a city
reborn and houses a collection of modern art from
all over the world. There are some excellent hotels
in the city centre within walking distance of
restaurants and bars in the old part of the town.
To the west of Bilbao step back in time and stay
in the beautifully preserved town of Santillana
del Mar, with its cobbled streets, mansions and

In
the heart of beautiful Amsterdam is a city centre
composed of brick houses with stepped gables,
built by prosperous 17th century merchants and
unchanged since Vermeer painted them.
The citizens love their “bruine kroegen”
– the cozy, simply decorated bars. Their
bicycles are so convenient for travelling to work
over hump back bridges. These are the people who,
in the 18th century, went mad for tulips trading
them at prices not unlike diamonds. See the concentric
rings of canals, so romantic at dusk when the
1,000 bridges over them are picked out in lights.
